Police Officer Accused of Helping Gang Rob Drug Dealers - City Room Blog - NYTimes.com: "New York police officer has been arrested on federal charges for his role in helping a violent robbery crew impersonate police officers so they could rob drug traffickers during bogus raids.
The officer, Emannuel Tavarez, supplied the crew with raid jackets that bore the “N.Y.P.D.” insignia, as well as badges, bullet-resistant vests and handcuffs, according to an indictment unsealed on Thursday.
Officer Tavarez, 30, is to be arraigned on Thursday in the Federal District Court for the Eastern District in Brooklyn.
The case stems from an indictment that was filed two years ago, when a number of crew members were arrested during a police sting operation in Queens. More than a dozen crew members face charges related to the robberies, which date back to at least 2001, and at least five have pleaded guilty, according to court records. All the defendants face a maximum sentence of life in prison."
