27-year old man convicted for the stabbing death of a 79-year-old woman eight years ago was put to death by lethal injection Thursday in a Virginia state prison.
Kent Jermaine Jackson died at 9:18 pm (0118 GMT, Friday), corrections officials said.
Police found the body Beulah Mae Kaiser in her apartment on April 18, 2000 with multiple knife wounds to the neck and head, a fractured skull, broken teeth and numerous other lacerations.After a frustrating 16-month investigation, police finally cracked the case after the DNA on a cigarette butt led them to a witness who helped finger Jackson as the killer.Jackson was arrested in 2001 and sentenced to death in 2002. His accomplice in the crime was sentenced to 135 years in prison.Jackson had been on death row for six years, as his numerous appeals were considered and rejected.His execution was carried out without complication, said Virginia Department of Corrections spokesman Larry Traylor.Jackson was defiant until the last moment. His final statement was: "You all can't kill me. I'm the king. Remember me like you remember Jesus. I'll be back."He was the 101st prisoner to be executed in Virginia since the death sentence was approved in 1976, and the 12th inmate to die after the Supreme Court approved the use of lethal injections in April 2008.Virginia ranks second in the number of death sentence executions in the last 30 years. Texas is first, with a total of 407 executions. If calculated on a per capita basis, Oklahoma ranks highest with 24 executions per one million residents, compared to 17 per million in Texas and 13 per million in Virginia.
