Coachella sees 99 arrests, mostly alcohol-related

Just under 100 people had been arrested at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival by Sunday afternoon, mostly on alcohol-related charges, authorities said. Indio police arrested one person on assault charges and 98 others for alcohol- or drug-related offenses, said Benjamin Guitron, the department spokesman. "That's just a little bit higher than previous years (of the festival)," Guitron said. "We don't know why - we've been doing this for over a decade, and it's not any different as far as how we're handling it." About 60 percent of the arrests through Saturday morning and 80 percent of the arrrests Saturday night were on alcohol charges, with the rest drug-related, he said. No one had been arrested Sunday as of 3 p.m. Police were encouraging people to dress comfortably and hydrate well with non-alcoholic drinks as Sunday's temperatures were significantly higher than the festival's rainy beginning and weather than visitors might be used to. "We just want people to have a good time," Guitron said. "If you can avoid us, other than saying hello and asking for directions or saying `thank you,' we'll all have a good time."
